Summary and Introduction

Abstract: A list of 470 theses relating to herpetology in the broad sense, produced by students at Australian universities, is presented. By far the majority of theses have been produced since 1970, and almost half by just three institutions, the Universities of Sydney, Western Australia and Melbourne.

Introduction: A vast amount of data has been generated by research students in the form of theses. In many cases, the research in such theses has remained unpublished in the mainstream literature as their authors progress to different areas of research, or even away from research altogether. In such cases, the few copies of the theses held in University libraries (and often only in Departmental or School libraries, not the central libraries) remain as the exclusive repository for the data produced. While there is some access to titles of higher degree theses (e.g., M.Sc., Ph.D.) through the Union List of Higher Degree Theses in Australian University Libraries (University of Tasmania Library, Hobart) and its supplements (1966-1989), Honours theses often remain unknown to all but the student and supervisor. Even the higher degree theses in herpetology are not readily accessed by any simple combination of keywords, because of the diverse nature of herpetology. For example, in searching for titles relating to reptiles and amphibians in the Union List, I found relevant titles under the subject headings agriculture, anatomy, biochemistry, biology, ecology, environmental studies, genetics, palaeontology, physiology, veterinary science and zoology.

In an attempt to gather together this diverse and unfortunately rarely accessed literature, this list of theses was compiled. I have endeavoured to include all theses up to the end of 1992, together with those few 1993 theses of which I am aware to date, although I have been unable to locate the dates and titles of a few theses that I know were produced. The list was initially generated from titles extracted from the Union List of Higher Degree Theses and its supplements, and from lists of herpetological theses published in the Newsletter of the Australian Society of Herpetologists. To these were added titles gleaned from lists of references in many research papers, lists of theses kindly provided by zoology, biological science and physiology departments and by student supervisors, and from numerous dusty cupboards of theses held at various universities. In total, 470 theses (4 D.Sc., 3 M.D., 141 Ph.D., 49 M.Sc., 8 M.Sc.(prelim.), 1 M.Appl.Sci., 1 M.Agr.Sci., 1 M.Nat.Res., 1 M.Litt., 250 B.Sc. or B.A.(Hons.), 1 Zoology IV thesis, 1 Zoology III special project, 1 Cert.Equiv.Hons.(Zool.), 2 B.Sc.(Med.), 1 B.Sc.(Vet.), 2 B.Nat.Res., 2 Dip.Nat.Res., 1 Dip.Mus.Stud.) are cited in the following list. For their assistance in supplying institutional lists of theses, and for tracking down the elusive details of obscure theses, I thank S. Blomberg, M. Bull, M. Davies, J. de Bavay, D. Booth, K. Christian, G. Courtice, B. Firth, A. Georges, A. Greer, P. Harlow, J. Joss, N. Kos, T. McConnell, D. Metcalfe, M. Peterson, R. Shine, R. Swain, G. Torr, G. Watson and P. Woolley.

The list includes all theses that are based on, or from the title appear to be based on, any aspect of amphibians or reptiles. Consequently it includes, in addition to basic ecological and systematic studies of reptiles and amphibians, any titles that cover organisms known to parasitise such hosts, anatomical, biochemical and physiological studies, whether exclusively on amphibians and reptiles or in the form of comparative studies of vertebrates, and studies using reptile and amphibian products, such as snake venoms. I have not personally been able to examine all theses listed to verify the accuracy of the citation. In some cases, different dates were provided by alternative sources. Presumably these mostly reflect differences between the year as provided on the thesis itself (date of completion/submission) and the year of award of the degree. In such cases, I have given the earlier date. For higher degree theses, copies of which are generally held in the central library system of the University, I have only listed the University involved. For Bachelor (Honours) and Diploma theses, which are generally only held in a Departmental or School collection, I have attempted to list the Department or School in which the work was done. Inclusion of a thesis title does not guarantee that access to that thesis is available.

The earliest thesis I have been able to trace is from 1912, a D.Sc. thesis by S.J. Johnston at the University of Sydney, on the trematodes of frogs. Herpetological research at the Honours level began in 1944, with a Sydney University thesis by P.G. Larcombe on the physiology of metamorphosis in Limnodynastes peronii. The earliest herpetological M.Sc. was a 1949 study of the cardiovascular system of Varanus varius by S.J. Copland at the University of Sydney, followed in 1955 by the earliest Ph.D., A.R. Main's research on speciation in Crinia at the University of Western Australia. However, only 21 theses (2 D.Sc., 2 Ph.D., 1 M.D., 3 M.Sc., 12 B.Sc.(Hons.), 1 B.A.(Hons.)) had appeared prior to 1960, and an additional 54 theses (10 Ph.D., 1 M.D., 10 M.Sc., 1 B.Sc.(Med.), 31 B.Sc.(Hons.), 1 Zoology III special project) between 1960 and 1969. The number of theses doubled during the 1970s, with 48 Ph.D., 1 M.D., 1 M.Agr.Sci., 9 M.Sc., 4 M.Sc.(prelim.), 68 B.Sc.(Hons.) and 1 Certificate of Equivalent Honours theses, a total of 132 titles, and has continued to rise sharply, with 2 D.Sc., 68 Ph.D., 22 M.Sc., 3 M.Sc.(prelim.), 1 M.Appl.Sci., 1 M.Nat.Res., 98 B.Sc.(Hons.), 1 B.A.(Hons.), 1 B.Sc.(Med.), 2 B.Nat.Res., 2 Dip.Nat.Res. and 1 Dip.Mus.Stud. awarded during the 1980s, a total of 202 titles.

Prior to 1960, only three institutions (University of Sydney, University of Tasmania, University of Western Australia) had produced herpetological theses. By 1969, these had been joined by the University of New South Wales (1961, B.Sc.(Hons.)), University of New England (1962, B.Sc.(Hons.)), University of Melbourne (1964, B.Sc.(Hons.)), Australian National University (1966, Ph.D., M.Sc.), University of Queensland (1967, Ph.D., M.Sc.) and Monash University (1968, M.Sc.). Overall, the greatest numbers of herpetological theses have been produced by the University of Sydney (88), University of Melbourne (69) and University of Western Australia (58), almost a half (46%) of the total number of theses located.
